The fire took place around 12:58 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 28, when the Yonkers Fire Department responded to a call for a fire at the home located at 423 Odell Ave., in Yonkers.
The two-alarm fire was believed to have started in the garage and since the residents were away it was not noticed until the entire first floor was fully involved in flames, said Yonkers FD Deputy Chief Joseph Citrone.
The first arriving fire company units were unable to enter the house due to the conditions.
Poor water pressure in the surrounding area contributed to problems in putting out the fire, Citrone said.
Three separate companies were assigned to patrol the neighborhood for flying debris that could have possibly started other fires.
Seventeen companies and 74 firefighters worked for four hours to contain the fire that ultimately destroyed the home.
Three firefighters went to the hospital with minor injuries.
